In one published study, 20 patients with visible chronic facial photodamage received two superficial full-face treatments. Blinded physician evaluation found an average 25.1% improvement in overall photoaging, a statistically significant result. Treatment discomfort averaged just 1.9 out of 10, without topical anesthetic, and post-treatment effects were limited primarily to mild to moderate redness and swelling.

Histologic evaluation also showed that something important was happening beneath the visible surface. Researchers observed a dermal inflammatory response following the very superficial epidermal treatment, even though the laser produced relatively limited superficial tissue injury. That response remained evident at one week and had returned toward baseline by two weeks.

Researchers suggested that this controlled response may contribute to the visible clinical improvement that follows treatment.

A subsequent clinical study of the same 2910 nm laser platform also found objective and subjective improvements in photoaging with high patient satisfaction. In the group receiving the more superficial treatment approach, post-treatment redness lasted an average of approximately 1.7 days, and swelling occurred after only a small percentage of treatments.
