The Foundation of Every Routine: Cleansing and Gentle Exfoliation, Done Correctly

Skincare does not begin with actives. It begins with the basics.

At Nude, we believe the most refined skin is rarely the result of doing more. It is the result of doing the essential steps well, consistently, and with restraint. Two of the most important and most misunderstood steps are cleansing and exfoliation.

When done correctly, they create the foundation for calm, balanced, healthy skin. When done aggressively, they are often the reason skin becomes reactive, dry, or unpredictable.

Cleansing is not meant to feel harsh

A good cleanser does one job. It removes makeup, sunscreen, oil, and buildup without stripping the barrier.

If your skin feels tight after washing, that is not “clean.” That is disruption. The barrier is your skin’s protective layer, and winter, stress, and over-cleansing can weaken it quickly. Cleansing should feel gentle, quiet, and supportive.

In most routines, cleansing once at night is enough. Morning skin often benefits from a light rinse rather than a second full cleanse. The goal is balance, not overcorrection.

Exfoliation is a tool, not a daily requirement

Exfoliation is often treated as a shortcut to glow. In reality, it is a controlled form of stimulation that should be used intentionally.

A gentle exfoliator can improve texture, help clear congestion, and support a smoother, more even surface. But exfoliation should never come at the expense of barrier health.

If your skin is dry, irritated, or stinging, exfoliation is not the answer. Stability comes first.

The Nude approach is simple. Exfoliate only when your skin is calm enough to tolerate it, and only as often as your skin truly needs. More is not better. More is often inflammation.

The routine that works is the one you can repeat

The most effective skincare routines are not complicated. They are consistent.

Cleanse with intention. Exfoliate conservatively. Hydrate daily. Protect with SPF.

When these steps are done in the right order and with the right frequency, skin becomes less reactive, more even, and more resilient over time.

The Nude standard

Cleansing and exfoliation should never feel like punishment. They should feel like maintenance.

The goal is not to strip the skin into submission. The goal is to support the barrier so everything else works better.

Great skin starts with the foundation.
